Post of Random Crap #1
Hello and welcome to Sam Backhouse's Big Website of Random Crap. Here is a little bit
of info about me: I was born on the soggy island of Britain in the palindrome year 1991 into a generation that I can't associate with. I made my first drawing when I was 14 months old and this was before I'd even discovered how to walk which came a little bit later. I became fascinated with the joy and pleasure of creating different worlds with pen and paper. I entertained myself by filling up stapled pieces of paper with drawings and stories and when I was about six years old I was introduced to the 2 comics The Beano & The Dandy which were very influential and inspired me to create my own comics. And so in 1998 I created a little comic for myself called The Geeno and in this comic a character called Gobby Glucker was born- a boy who can't stop talking. I used to tape things like pencils and sticks of gum to the covers pretending that they were free gifts. I've no idea how many Geenos I created in total. In 2003 I started creating a new comic which I called Smudge, and in this comic some new characters emerged; Peter the Pissed off Parent, Mister Mad, Longface and L'il Shrimp (Longface is a boy who has infinite stretching powers (by stretching powers I mean a character similar to Plastic Man); and L'il Shrimp is a character who looks like a couple of eyes with three hairs above them resting on top of a couple of feet). I created the comic for myself, pretending that I was making it for the public- and in 2011 I drew my last issue of Smudge (#100). This end was also a new beginning- in the same year I began work on an apocalyptic themed graphic novel called A Play Scope about the world ending in five different ways on the same day- and I tried to get the book published a year later but I had no luck so I decided to self publish it instead with the website lulu.com. So far as of now (Feb 2020 as I write this), I now have a total of 19 self published books:
A Play Scope, Little Books of Random Crap (Seven Books), Big Books of Random Crap (Seven Books), The Big Book of L'il Shrimp, The Big Book of Longface, The Big Book of Mister Mad, Crazy Book of Colourful Cartoon Chaos. I should add that I am not only a cartoonist but an occasional animator and I write quite a lot of poetry and short stories from time to time too... I have been wanting to create my first novel for some time which I would like to get properly published. 2020 might be the year when a novel finally comes to fruition.
