Post #5 - Reflections - A film by Sam Backhouse

Reflections is the first feature length film by me, available to watch online (YouTube;https://www.youtube.com/@sambackhouse ) from August 8th 2026 at 4.44pm GMT. The film is an 80 minute documentary compiled of a lot of footage taken over the years, ranging from photos taken of myself from childhood, archive footage taken from my travels in countries such as Senegal, snippets of short films and stop motion animations, extracts of pages from some of my self published comic books, photographs I’ve taken over the years and much more..

For several years I had been feeling a deep inspiration to create a documentary film with a poetic voice over narrative similarly to Chris Marker’s film Sans Soleil. It was back in December 2009 at the age of eighteen when I made a short personal family film shot on location on holiday in Scotland with my father, stepmother, half brother and step siblings. After I returned back home to England I put together the footage I’d shot on my digital camera at the time onto a laptop at my art college in Barnstaple here in England, and created the film which I then burnt onto several discs. I used to work on films and animations at college whenever I found some spare time, making full use of the film software programs, and this actually didn’t have anything to do with my course work at all and I recall one of the teachers who kept on telling me off when I was noticed working on something which wasn’t a part of the project I was meant to be focusing on instead. “You’re not supposed to be doing that-!”

The Scotland film I made, simply entitled Scotland Holiday was received very well by my family when I showed it to them and my father told me it was his favourite film. This encouraged me to create more films, and so I did.

I had been making a few short films and animations prior to 2009 already and remember frequently borrowing my father’s camcorder during my teenage years and playing around with film and sometimes trying to create stop motion animations which were made poorly by recording something for a second before stopping the recording, and during playback the result would end up looking like a slow animation with a lot of clicking sounds going on. I don’t know where these early creations of mine have ended up.

I was fascinated by animation as well as literature, comics, cinema and other art works. In the 2000’s I remember being very inspired by the Animated Exeter festival which used to go on in the city of Exeter; during the festival I had the privilege of going to talks by Aardman co-founder Peter Lord and another from the legendary stop motion genius Ray Harryhausen; I absolutely adore Jason and the Argonauts and it is without a doubt one of my all time favourite films, within my top 100 favourite films.

When I left art college and begun studying illustration for a degree, I decided to finally bring in my animation skills into some projects, most notably during my final third year where I created a short 3 minute animation collage entitled History of America which was my angry reaction to my enormous dislike of the corporation known as the United States of America.

During the project I also created several short paper cut out animations and I am still very proud of some of these animations today, particularly Car, Coconut, Food, Game OverLSD & TV. It is only recently that I have discovered the genius work of Phil Mulloy and his style reminds me of these animations I’ve made.

Andrei Tarkovsky blew my mind with the film Stalker when I first saw it at about the age of eighteen; it left a very deep and powerful impact on my soul.

Then when I discovered Twin Peaks and the work of David Lynch I was again absolutely blown away in a similar way to how I felt when I first experienced Tarkovsky. I created the short film Door in 2015 drawing on inspiration from these artists, and also Kubrick.

In 2023 I was invited by a friend to create some art work for his 60th birthday party for the following year which was going to take place on his land in North Devon; I decided to create some visuals to project at the party so I built up a body of work over the course of a few months including some stop motion animations and footage I shot during my travels in The Gambia, Senegal (or Casamance) and a brief visit to Guinea Bissau.

One day in the early days of 2024 I think it was, actually it was one evening, I was in the caravan I was living in at the time and I discovered that a china doll I’d had since at least the age of three had a head which could move, and suddenly a great idea formed in my mind of seeing if she would animate well.

She did indeed. I animated her upon a shelf in my caravan at night with an overhead torch and moved around various objects including shells, a wooden elephant, a toothbrush and a fire extinguisher which could also teleport and it kept spooking the doll out; the animation was completely improvised.

She became a star of mine and after projecting visuals at my friend’s party I was then invited to project at other parties, events and small festivals.

I gave the doll the name Heidi and she is a recurring character who appears throughout my Party Reel series, ten of which I have now put together. Some of my favourite Heidi animations are Heidi in the Woods, Heidi and the Books, Heidi and the Ping Pong Party, Heidi in October and Heidi in Black and White.

Reflections is comprised of four segments which have been called chapters and the first 3 chapters were created in May 2025 and released individually online, the first chapter so far being the most popular, and it can also be viewed like a stand-alone film if you want, similarly to Star Wars before it became known as Episode IV: A New Hope.

I felt very inspired to keep on creating more parts for Reflections. I don’t intend to reveal any spoilers here. After three Reflections chapters in the can before the end of May 2025 I sat back and focused on creating more footage to project at events as well as putting together the third annually released issue of my 123 page Blot Comic which I released on the site Lulu, dedicated to David Lynch.

I became drawn to the idea of creating a final chapter for Reflections, a Chapter 4, and I wanted to take things to a different level and stitch together all the chapters of Reflections into a feature length work of art. I sat on the idea for over a year and finally put ideas that’d been building up in my mind together in June 2026, completing the film. This film is now yours to enjoy for free from August 8th 2026.

The film speaks for itself and this post here wasn’t intended as being a deeply detailed explanation of what the film is about; that’s really for you the viewer to work out for yourself. I have viewed the film several times now and it becomes a different film each time.

My on line stream is on a different line to the inter net of webs and nets; what are webs and nets but traps..

Post of Random Crap #3 - about Blot Issue Three, David Lynch, other works of art...

November the 4th 2025; Tuesday. My last post in this blog was October the 8th 2024, another Tuesday. Before that it was a Monday in 2020. Keeping the pattern I should've opted for a Wednesday in 2028 to make my third post here-!
Blot Issue Three, the third issue of my annually released 123 page comic series, has 'landed'- a few weeks ago to split rabbits. And it's dedicated to the late, great David Lynch, an enormous inspiration to me. Here is the cover to the third issue of Blot itself-:

Hang on a minute- that's too small. I'll make it larger.

Anyway- why are you looking at this on a screen-? It looks better printed off. That way you haven't got all the added crap around it existing on the internuts such as idiotic blipverts trying to hypnotise you into accepting a digital prison by the day; "buy the latest Nintendobox Sixty Five and immerse yourself into the Metacurse; you will be able to scroll with your tongue now on the brand spanking new Lingua-Pad Twenty Five; hey you-yes you-you are a complete and utter stooge if you do not own the very latest silicon packed J-Phone Twenty Five Zillion; plants crave electrolytes.."

Here is a link to buy this 123 page comic should you choose to do so. It can be experienced as a stand alone comic, not relying on knowledge from Issues One and Two by the way. Issue Three delivers a different experience to the previous issues of Blot as it is the first comic of mine where I have taken my time more and combined my inkwork with pencil, appearing on the vast majority of the pages. Anyway, here is the link I wrote about a few sentences ago, and I have taken the time to type every single letter and number by hand for this link here instead of copy and paste cheating (note: I love to write a good fiction) -:

https://www.lulu.com/shop/sam-backhouse/blot-3/paperback/product-v8mvm2m.html?q&page=1&pageSize=4&fbclid=IwY2xjawN3B9FleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETBEcnVpd2FHeUIwZlB3eXREAR6mOflCyDJEDYKiJZplOUOE2WK58qCXziGJ0WIn7a5wE2mejrNQSBHLYatjXA_aem_-BZy38krD5LV4o4F9OWSmg

Some samples from Blot the Third which you can look at but do not read the last boxes until you buy the book because they're a plot spoiler, and I can't be arsed to censor the last boxes-:

That's my signature in the right hand corner; SRBhs; this stands for Samwise Raven Backhorse, a pseudonym for my real name.

Here's another wee sample-:

Sorry, I couldn't help myself there-! Being sensible now- here is a page featuring two of my favourite characters, Longface and Mr Literally-:

And here's a page drawn from the perspective of my character Mister Mad, a sample from a comic by him appearing within the comic too; a comic within a comic-:
And as a bonus, here's a second Mister Mad page for your glazzies-:
The above is also 1 of 26 'Gide' pages drawn by this character; there is a page for every letter of the alphabet so this one was for the letter 'K'.

And here's another cartoon, specifically a doodle page-:

And now, due to the fascistic 'nature' of this digital internuts, I have found myself unable to provide this blog with more samples from the comic I wanted to include, probably due to some of the language contained within, and the nanny mollycoddled Big Bother state clearly wants to keep you all wearing nappies and be surrounded by bubblewrap, protecting your eyes from the combinations of symbols in certain orders in case it causes you to hurl up the last thing you ate. Some words have managed to sneak past the eye of Mordor on here, but the Gurgle has clearly picked up words such as *gosh*- the 'S' word- oh MY. How can we have this-!? "Look, there's another fourteen year old who's leapt in front of a scooter because he read the 'S' word.." It's people like me who really ought to be deeply ashamed for contributing towards adding what is pure filth into this world. So don't buy this comic; it'll do you a world of good to not have it in your life. Sorry to have wasted your time. Over and out.

And one other thing, here's an added bonus of an improvised stop motion I made on the evening of Oct 1st in a woodland in North Devon, England, featuring my china doll Heidi-:

And here's another stop motion animation I created on Hallowe'en-:

Post of Random Crap #2

I have returned to this blog after a gap of over 4 and a half years and the world has become a darker place within that space of time since 'Post of Random Crap #1'. Now here is 'Post of Random Crap #2' which is being written on my oldest cousin's 40th birthday, also the date of the release of my second 123 page comic known as Blot, another #2. And now it is time to search for the links to these comics which can be bought from the self publishing site known as lulu.com, a print on demand service which I've been addicted to for over a decade now...

A link to buy #1 is here-: https://www.lulu.com/shop/sam-backhouse/blot/paperback/product-84zpzv8.html?page=1&pageSize=4&fbclid=IwY2xjawFyMzpleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHfjGzoHsphZSXgw4rGgSWtVpw8CVhORJPz5iaS_WbYiM13oIFR7utZO7OQ_aem_Rc2-hZEi2kBWoFZFX4qyqw

A link to buy #2 is here-: https://www.lulu.com/shop/sam-backhouse/blot-2/paperback/product-gj89kqe.html?q&page=1&pageSize=4&fbclid=IwY2xjawFyMrVleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHWc3-11_V5wny4uEOGUy7fUVoR7fm_If4ZdPFwSzJ7ffsd4MkNSlviI7lQ_aem_iPYnebGeWlpyZwGhHsirlg

A description of Blot #2-: Mountain essays, violent snowmen, millipedesexuality, plummeting anvils, broken legs, alcohol cereal, ghost post deliverers, bodiless and armless beings, levitating spectacled weirdos, giant conks, sprout disliking teenagers with stretching powers, mindless consumers, Woke mermaids, 20th Century Cavemen, cats who can see through the simulation and many more odd bits and pieces have been assembled together in this second issue of the 123 page comic series known as Blot, created by the Milky-Waylion known as Sam Backhouse.

And here are a few pages of previews from the 123 page comic-:

Ghosty Postie made his first appearance in the first issue of Blot released in November 2023, my most recent new character. He appeared on the back cover of #1 drawn on post it notes. He appears a couple of times in #2, drawn on envelopes this time.

Here is another page-:

Longface, the boy with the stretchy body first appeared in a comic I used to draw for myself between 2003-2011 called Smudge, and he made his debut in #14 in 2004 along with another character I've been drawing since then too, L'il Shrimp, who looks like two eyeballs with three hairs ontop and two feet. Their birthday is shared and 2024 is their 20th anniversary.

I like to do things in threes so I'll throw in another page for free-:

This is the back cover of Blot #2 which took me several hours to create. It contains the names of all of my main characters on a Scrabble board, my favourite board game. I created a similar thing in my book Big Book of Random Crap Book Six. There's probably a way to achieve this on the internet somewhere very quickly and I didn't create it this way at all; I spent hours trying to work out the puzzle myself and I succeeded. It feels much more rewarding to create something myself as opposed to speeding processes up with AI.

(I guess there's more that I could write about in this post with other happenings in my world within that 4 and a bit year gap. Let's fill in the missing pieces briefly then-:)

Post of Random Crap #1

Post of Random Crap #1

Hello and welcome to Sam Backhouse's Big Website of Random Crap. Here is a little bit
of info about me: I was born on the soggy island of Britain in the palindrome year 1991 into a generation that I can't associate with. I made my first drawing when I was 14 months old and this was before I'd even discovered how to walk which came a little bit later. I became fascinated with the joy and pleasure of creating different worlds with pen and paper. I entertained myself by filling up stapled pieces of paper with drawings and stories and when I was about six years old I was introduced to the 2 comics The Beano & The Dandy which were very influential and inspired me to create my own comics. And so in 1998 I created a little comic for myself called The Geeno and in this comic a character called Gobby Glucker was born- a boy who can't stop talking. I used to tape things like pencils and sticks of gum to the covers pretending that they were free gifts. I've no idea how many Geenos I created in total. In 2003 I started creating a new comic which I called Smudge, and in this comic some new characters emerged; Peter the Pissed off Parent, Mister Mad, Longface and L'il Shrimp (Longface is a boy who has infinite stretching powers (by stretching powers I mean a character similar to Plastic Man); and L'il Shrimp is a character who looks like a couple of eyes with three hairs above them resting on top of a couple of feet). I created the comic for myself, pretending that I was making it for the public- and in 2011 I drew my last issue of Smudge (#100). This end was also a new beginning- in the same year I began work on an apocalyptic themed graphic novel called A Play Scope about the world ending in five different ways on the same day- and I tried to get the book published a year later but I had no luck so I decided to self publish it instead with the website lulu.com. So far as of now (Feb 2020 as I write this), I now have a total of 19 self published books:
A Play Scope, Little Books of Random Crap (Seven Books), Big Books of Random Crap (Seven Books), The Big Book of L'il Shrimp, The Big Book of Longface, The Big Book of Mister Mad, Crazy Book of Colourful Cartoon Chaos. I should add that I am not only a cartoonist but an occasional animator and I write quite a lot of poetry and short stories from time to time too... I have been wanting to create my first novel for some time which I would like to get properly published. 2020 might be the year when a novel finally comes to fruition.
